A note from Executive Director, Janet DesGeorges
Until I had a child born to our family who was Deaf, I have to admit when I encountered individuals who are differently-abled, I tended to only see 'deficit'. It has been a great lesson to the idea that experiencing life in a non-typical way can be challenging, but it can also be filled with unbelievable joy. I remember when someone asked our daughter if she could take a 'magic pill' and not be deaf anymore, and she just simply said, 'no, it's a part of who I am.' I have learned so much in this experience of seeing the journey as one of joy, and it bubbled up in me from being around other families who modeled that for me, and the Deaf/Hard of Hearing adults in our lives that helped us to see joy in the process. That's a part of who and what we are at Hands & Voices. We pass that along to the next family who comes into our community. Thank you for your support so we can continue the joy!
