The Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center (HSDC) is pleased to announce an upcoming Professional Development Seminar:
“Introduction to Cued Speech”
Friday & Saturday, June 4-5, 2010
Presented by Kelly Lamar Crain, PhD
HSDC
1625 19th Avenue
Seattle, WA 98122
Cued language is to the eye what spoken language is to the ear. From the National Cued Speech Organization website: “Cued speech is a mode of communication based on the phonemes and properties of traditionally spoken languages. Cueing allows users who are deaf or hard of hearing or who have language/communication disorders to access the basic, fundamental properties of spoken languages through the use of vision.” With eight handshapes and four locations, students will, by the end of the workshop, be able to cue anything in the English language. Program attendees will also learn the history and development of Cued Speech, and have the opportunity to tour HSDC’s innovative Ned Behnke Speech Language Preschool.
ASHA CEUs and Washington State Clock Hours will both be offered for this session. Please see the attached brochure for more details and registration information. If you are unable to attend both days of the session, or are interested in learning about Cued Speech without necessarily undergoing cueing instruction, we will also be offering a FREE introductory lecture on Saturday morning. Registration is required for either the full 2-day seminar or the introductory lecture. Please contact me if you have any questions. Also, please feel free to share this information with other professionals or with families who may benefit from this training opportunity. Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
Amy Denham
